Medals

Medal production has played an important role within our organisation, with historical
evidence of official and private medal manufacturing dating back to 1815.

Medals

A Badge of Honour

In 1815, the British Army requested that a medal be made for soldiers who had fought for their country in the Battle of Waterloo. Marking the start of our large-scale medal production, the manufacture of the Waterloo Medal was a mammoth task that involved the creation of around 40,000 medals, each individually engraved with the soldier’s name.

This significant undertaking marked the first production of military campaign medals and ultimately helped link our organisation to significant moments in national and international history.

Medals in the Twentieth Century

Medals in the Twentieth Century

The demand for coins and medals substantially increased following the start of the First World War in the summer of 1914. In 1939, the Second World War meant the requirement for coins and medals resurfaced, with the Ministry of Defence medals becoming an integral part of our business until 2017.

Medals in the Twenty-First Century

Medals in the Twenty-First Century

We still produce medals to this day, including sporting medals. In 2011, we had the honour of working with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), who teamed up with UK-based artists to create 4,700 London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games victory medals in gold, silver and bronze.

Our craftspeople also create Brilliant Uncirculated medals for the everyday collector. These collections cover a range of limited-edition, commemorative-themed medals, ranging from Star Wars™ to the classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses, struck in a range of alloys.
