How do new coins get to the banks?

The Royal Mint supplies new coins to cash centres operated on behalf of major banks and Post Offices. These cash centres then distribute coins to local branches according to demand from businesses and members of the public.

New coins are only required when demand cannot be met by coins already held within the banking system. If The Royal Mint has stocks of coins dated from previous years, these may be issued into circulation before coins bearing the current year’s date.
