Can I use Commemorative Crowns as ordinary coins? Why are some of them worth more than others?

Commemorative crowns are issued to mark special occasions and are intended primarily as collectable coins rather than for everyday use.

Crowns issued before 1990 have a face value of 25p (or five shillings for those issued before decimalisation in 1971). From 1990, the face value of new commemorative crowns was increased to £5 to better reflect the coin’s weight and size.

Commemorative crowns are legal tender, but this does not mean that shops, banks or other businesses are required to accept them. Some Post Office branches may accept commemorative crowns in exchange for goods and services, although we recommend checking with the branch first.
