What is a bullion coin?
Bullion coins are high-purity precious metal coins minted by governments or official mints, such as The Royal Mint. They are typically valued primarily according to the precious metal they contain, with their price influenced by the current market price of that metal.
Bullion coins are manufactured and struck with efficient, high-volume production in mind, helping to keep production costs low. Proof coins, by comparison, are produced to a higher standard of finish, often involving specially prepared dies, multiple strikes and additional handling, and are primarily intended for collectors.
